I was holding a can from which came a vapor which the sponge absorbed. I soon began to be oppressed by the strong, stifling choking odor, and wondered how long I could stand it before becoming chloroformed myself.

Source & context

Grace A. Andrews records this short smell dream. Her following waking qualification reads: “(I woke from the dream almost immediately and analyzed the experience as carefully as possible, remembered that I had had no dream of smelling while keeping the record, and went to sleep again.)” The author describes her own remembered sensation; it is not an instruction to use chloroform or evidence of actual exposure.
