Munich, August 12, 1837. During the night in a dream I sat in an inn in the Au, eating a midday meal. Beside me lay Jacobi’s Woldemar; opposite me sat a traveller who was also dining and asked which book I was reading. I handed him the volume; without further ado he put it in his pocket and presented me with two baskets, in the larger of which lay a splendid boa, coiled up and enclosing a smaller snake with its long body.

Ein Buch gegen zwei Schlangenkörbe

München, 12. August 1837.
