Hamburg, 5. September 1839. Über Nacht ein seltsamer Traum: Ich sah einen toten Menschen, der sein Geisterleben auf Erden in einem hölzernen Körper fortführte. Anfangs hatte ich vor diesem gräßlichen Wesen, das mir in einer Gesellschaft vorgestellt wurde, große Angst; als er mir aber die Hand reichte und ich fühlte, daß diese warm war, schwand mein Grauen.
