Hamburg, December 2, 1840. Two dreams:

I lay in a swamp, freezing and naked. People passed, mocked me and spat at me. That suited me. But others also came, offering me a hand and wanting to pull me out. This goaded my fury; I flung myself back, gnashing my teeth, and resisted. ‘Is it enough?’ was my last thought, merging with the thought of God.

Im Sumpf zwischen Hohn und Hilfe

Hamburg, 2. Dezember 1840.
