Vienna, December 16, 1846. Dream during the night: a little pleasant street, brightly lit by the sun, into which I turned; then a long bridge; then a gloomy passage formed by houses whose windowed sides one could not see; uncanny beggar figures at the entrance and inside too; it was not quite dark, trees could be seen gleaming across at the end; the figures became ever more threatening. ‘Where does this path lead?’ I asked. ‘To the churchyard!’ was the answer. They crowded around me, but without doing anything to me; I turned back.

Der dunkle Weg zum Kirchhof
Wien, 16. Dezember 1846.
