Vienna, May 29, 1863. I dreamed I was in Moscow, with Engländer, who spoke, read and wrote Russian excellently. We went out, and suddenly had to climb a rope ladder in order to continue. The passage led across an attic floor, beneath a multitude of bells that one struck even when crawling, and which then gave forth sounds. ‘That is how the Tsar keeps his carillon going!’ said my companion.

Die Leiter unter dem Glockenspiel
Wien, 29. Mai 1863.
