Sixth observation. A hot iron is brought near my face, held far enough away for the sensation of heat to be slight. I dream of the chauffeurs, who broke into houses and forced the people there to reveal where their money was by bringing their feet close to a brazier. The idea of these chauffeurs soon brings that of the duchesse d’Abrantès, who, in my dream, I suppose has taken me on as her secretary. I had indeed once read some details about the chauffeurs in the Memoirs of this witty woman.
