It was preternaturally dark. I could hear the huffs of my boots as they scraped across the desert sand. Walking across the sea of nothing, I chased a man, couldn't tell you why exactly, only that I had doing it so long it only seemed natural. The creaking of my leather holsters kept pace with every step, and the air felt electrically charged. Grit and ache were in every part of my being, and it felt like I hadn't had a drink from my water bladders in ages; the dirt and salt coated my mouth. I smelled him before I saw him, in the desert every thing has the same taste, the same empty smell where everything has been bleached dead, and there is a kind of hollowness to the place. Without think I fired twice as he emerged from the dune, my heart racing, my hand steady. I slowly approached his writhing body using the tip of my left gun to lift the hood of his cloak. And then I woke up.
