I dreamed I had ordered a telescope and a microscope from an instrument maker in Nuremberg, and when he brought them I could not pay him, which, by his account, put him in extremely great difficulty.

And on waking I needed the most exact recollection of everything I had done in Nuremberg for a year in order to convince myself it was a dream. But even then it was not settled; for half a year I was often troubled by the thought that the matter might be true after all, and had to convince myself anew of its conditional impossibility.
