Munich, July 6, 1837. During the night I dreamed: I saw old King Maximilian Joseph buried and King Ludwig crowned. Both took place in the burial vault, and funeral and coronation ceremonies mingled horribly: the funeral torches served for the torchlight procession at the coronation, and when King Ludwig put on the crown, King Maximilian nodded his head from his coffin. I was among the Crown officials; as we climbed up again, King Ludwig locked the vault and said to me, giving me the key: ‘Do not let him out, but do not let me in either!’

Die Krone und der Schlüssel zur Gruft

München, 6. Juli 1837.
