I dreamed, namely, that the sixteenth century lay beside me in bed in the shape of a large picture book, and I tried in vain to wake it. In the picture book I saw all sorts of figures of that century, and white space beside them on the pages.

München, 2. Februar 1839. Über Nacht hatte ich den absurdesten aller Träume.
Ich träumte nämlich, das XVI. Jahrhundert läge neben mir im Bett in Gestalt eines großen Bilderbuchs und ich suchte es umsonst zu erwecken. Ich sah in dem Bilderbuch allerlei Gestalten jenes Jahrhunderts und weißen Raum dabei auf den Blättern.
