We were going for a long drive, but just before the time of starting it began to rain very hard. I said to my friend, ‘I am a stoic, therefore I cannot be disappointed nor unhappy, therefore I do not care whether it rains or not; I am perfectly neutral, and if you were a stoic you would feel the same.’

Public domain in the United States (original 1896 publication) ↗

The original April 1896 US publication is public domain in the United States by publication-term expiry. The independently read original journal scans and title page, together with article bibliographic metadata, establish the edition; Internet Archive metadata marks US NOT_IN_COPYRIGHT. This uses five complete quotations printed in that article, not the unpublished 381-record study corpus, a modern edition or a new Creative Commons grant. Expanded author identities and death dates are not assumed; no blanket worldwide clearance is asserted.
