The traditional topic

Courage is the Mars-associated Lot, also translated as Boldness or Daring in discussions of the Hermetic scheme. Its topics include initiative, confrontation, endurance and the willingness to act under pressure. The formula uses Fortune, placing action in relation to lived conditions.

Arabic name and planetary association

سهم الشجاعة (sahm al-shajāʿa). This is a descriptive Arabic translation of the topic, not a claim that all historical authors used this name. The displayed identifies the associated planet, Mars. It is a planetary association, not a distinct ancient Arabic glyph for this Lot. The planet associated with a Lot and the ruler of the sign containing it are separate parts of a reading.

Day and night formulas

Using the Paulus convention, day: Ascendant + Fortune − Mars. Night: Ascendant + Mars − Fortune. All terms are zodiac longitudes; wrap the final answer into 0°–360°. Fortune and Spirit in these formulas mean the Lots already calculated for the same chart’s sect.

How to read the placement

Examine how you meet a demanding situation: by beginning, persisting, setting a boundary, seeking help or deciding that confrontation is not useful. Courage need not be dramatic or aggressive. The sign offers a symbolic prompt about your response, while safety, preparation and context determine what action is sensible.

An example to picture

A difficult conversation might call for writing down a clear request and choosing an appropriate time to speak. Another situation might call for leaving and asking for support. Both can be deliberate responses; a Lot cannot decide which is safe in a real situation.

A common misunderstanding

Courage does not predict violence, injury, military success or personal bravery. It is not a reason to take unnecessary risks or a test that someone must pass to prove strength.

A question to sit with

Where would one clear, proportionate action help, and what preparation or support would make that action more responsible?
