Draconic astrology: true and mean nodes

Draconic subtracts the selected tropical North Node from every longitude, angle and cusp. Both nodes then define the zodiac origin; planetary separations stay fixed.

The idea in context

A Draconic chart rotates the zodiac reference so the selected natal North Node is at 0° Aries. It is a different frame for the same birth moment, not a separate set of planetary positions.

MAKE IT CONCRETE

An example to picture

If the selected North Node is at 20° Taurus (50°), a planet at 10° Cancer (100°) becomes 20° Taurus (50°). Subtract the same 50° from each cusp and angle.

How to read it

Choose true or mean reference, inspect the method label, then compare the rotated sign with your tropical placement and its unchanged house.

A common misunderstanding

A Draconic Aries North Node is a mathematical definition, not evidence that everyone has the same soul purpose. True and mean are distinct calculations.

What changes and what stays the same

Subtract the selected natal ascending node longitude from each planetary longitude, angle and house cusp, wrapping the result into 0–360°. The reference North Node becomes 0° Aries and its opposite South Node becomes 0° Libra. Sign labels and degrees change; angular separations, interplanetary aspects and house membership stay the same when the entire frame is rotated together.

Choose one node method

True node uses the instantaneous, oscillating orbital plane; mean node uses its smoothed motion. The website calculates its true-node reference locally from Astronomy Engine lunar position and velocity, expressed in the true ecliptic of date. The app uses Swiss Ephemeris SE_TRUE_NODE. Eleven reference comparisons from 1800 through 2026, including longitude wrap cases, differed by less than 0.003°; this sample is not a global accuracy guarantee. A saved web mean-node reference comes from the same-instant Swiss mean nodes when available; public charts use the disclosed mean-node series. Their methods are named beside the chart. Small differences can change a sign near a boundary. Neither method proves a more authentic identity.

Read the frame explicitly

Some astrologers use Draconic astrology to reflect on underlying motivations or compare symbolic themes with a tropical chart. Those themes are interpretive, not scientifically established facts about destiny, personality or past lives. A tropical placement description should not be silently presented as a Draconic reading.

Personal-chart scope

The Western personal-chart reference is separate from the selected house system. Transits, dating compatibility and astrocartography keep their tropical calculations. Vedic astrology remains a separate sidereal tradition using its own ayanamsha and node settings.

Try reading your own birth chart

Create a free birth chart, select the placement or symbol you are learning about, and read it alongside this lesson. A planet’s sign, house and aspects add context; keep your recorded birth time and chart settings in view.

Planets, signs, houses, and aspects

A natal reading combines several calculated layers instead of treating any one placement as a complete personality verdict.

Degrees and orbs

Each zodiac sign spans 30°, numbered from 0° through 29°. Each degree contains 60 arcminutes (′). The exact 0°–360° longitude drives the angular geometry used to detect aspects and their orbs; a degree is a position, not a strength score.

What a house is

Houses are 12 time- and location-dependent chart sectors bounded by calculated cusps. A planet’s house identifies the symbolic life area where astrological tradition considers that planet’s themes; it is not another zodiac sign.
